Timeline of the Mayan Empire
The History of the Mayan empire was broken into several different eras from around 2000 B.C to about 1521 A.D.
Early Preclassic- 2000 B.C. to 800 B.C.
Middle Preclassic- 800 B.C to 300 B.C Late Preclassic- 300 B.C to 240 A.D
Early Classic- 250 A.D to 475 A.DMiddle Classic- 475 A.D to 681 A.DLate Classic- 681 A.D to 900 A.D
Post Classic- 900 A.D to 1521 A.D |
In this era, people first settled in the Yucatan Peninsula and began farming and building villages. They also began to specialize talents and break off into social classes.
The Mayan population begins to boom during this age and they become central to trade and culture.
The Social Structure becomes more defined as villages grow into cities. Architecture becomes more advanced as temples are built in a pyramid shape.
The cities of Tikal, Chichen Itza and Copan grow to strength. Art and politics become more influential.
Mayan culture advances, architecture and art grow even more sophisticated. Palaces are constructed. Then civilization declines for an unknown reason.
Culture recovers, the mayan empire reaches the height if its powers. Overpopulation leads to hunger, disease, and death as well as rebellion. Foreign invaders take over.
The Northern mayan cities are taken over by the Toltecs. eventually, the Spanish come to Mesoamerica and nearly extinguish The Mayan culture.
